2024 - present

A self-hosted server running storage, media, automation and local inference, built to hold a photography archive that outgrew every consumer option.

Platform
TrueNAS SCALE on Debian 12
CPU
Ryzen 9 5900XT, 16 cores / 32 threads
Memory
128 GB DDR4
Transcoding
Intel ARC A380, AV1 and HEVC
Transcode pipeline saved
710.5 GB
Reclaimed by deduplication
747 GiB
Direct link throughput
960 Mbps

The machine runs Jellyfin and the media automation stack, n8n for workflows, Ollama for local models, and a Minecraft server. It is reachable from outside over Tailscale rather than by opening ports.

The numbers above are the point. A transcode pipeline built around the ARC card's AV1 encoder has recovered 710.5 GB, and deduplicating the library reclaimed another 747 GiB - roughly a drive's worth of space that did not have to be bought.

The honest open problem is backup. The array holds the only copy of a large photography archive, and getting a real second copy off this machine matters more than anything else on this page.
